Help us better understand the risk of coronary artery disease following cancer treatment
The Risk-guided disease management plan to prevent coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with previous cancer (REDEEM-CAD) study aims to understand whether chemotherapy or radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer increases the risk of developing CAD. We also want to know if best practice management (e.g. heart medication or change in lifestyle) reduces CAD risk.
If you have undergone chemotherapy or radiotherapy over 5 years ago you may qualify for this important study which may includes coronary calcium scoring and computerised tomography coronary angiogram (CTCA) to see if there is any blockage in your coronary artery. If there is evidence of CAD, you will receive a review with a cardiologist (heart specialist) and potential interventions will be discussed with you and your GP.
Who can participate?
To be eligible to participate you must be:
- 40+ years of age
- undergone chemotherapy or radiotherapy 5 years or more ago.
This study is being run in Victoria (Prahran) and Tasmania (Hobart).

What is involved?
If you are interested in participating, you will need to complete a screening visit to determine if you qualify for this study. This appointment will occur at the Baker Specialist Clinics (Melbourne) or the Menzies Institute for Medical Research (Hobart). Based on the assessment, we will determine whether you require further calcium scoring and CTCA.
There will be 3 visits involved over a 24-month period. Each session will take approximately 1 hours. Testing will include:
- 6 minute walk test
- questionnaires
- blood pressure and heart rate
- electrocardiogram
- Coronary Calcium Scoring and CTCA (if eligible).
You will receive the results of these tests.
