Student research project

Supervisors: Professor Peter Meikle and Dr Corey Giles

Global health challenge

Cardiometabolic diseases are the leading cause of mortality worldwide, encompassing a spectrum of conditions such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes (T2D), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and chronic kidney disease. The root of these diseases often lies in the complex dysregulation of lipid metabolism, presenting a critical target for intervention.

Innovative approach

At the forefront of metabolomics research, the Metabolomics Laboratory at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute is pioneering the integration of lipidomics and genomics to revolutionise our understanding and treatment of cardiometabolic diseases. With our advanced lipid profiling methodology — capable of measuring over 800 lipid species from a mere droplet of blood — we've set the stage for breakthroughs in early detection and risk assessment for conditions like CVD, T2D, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Research objective

This project seeks to harness our extensive collection of over 50,000 clinically relevant human samples for multi-omic integration. By deploying sophisticated statistical models and bioinformatic tools, we will dissect the complex interactions between lipid metabolic pathways, genetic-, environmental- and lifestyle-factors, identifying novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets that can revolutionise the management of cardiometabolic diseases.

Your role and opportunities

As an integral member of our team, you will delve into bioinformatics and statistical modelling, working with clinical and population cohorts to elucidate the relationships between lipid metabolism and cardiometabolic diseases. This project offers a unique blend of bioinformatics and computational work, providing you with a comprehensive skill set in multi-omics research, data analysis, and bioinformatics — highly sought-after skills in both academia and industry.

Why this project?
