Patrick joined the Cardiac Cellular Systems laboratory at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in 2023, bringing with him a diverse skill set centred around immunology, imaging, flow cytometry and analysis methods. His current work is focussed on small particles, either for the delivery of genetic modifying material in the form of lipid nanoparticles, or as a model for the adverse effects of micro and nanoplastic exposure on cardiac health.
Patrick completed his doctoral studies jointly at the University of Tasmania, Macquarie University, and Australian National University, investigating host directed therapies for malaria infection. He was subsequently awarded a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science fellowship to research the role of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in malaria at Osaka University, Japan. He completed a short-term fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin to develop deep learning algorithms to characterise cell images, and a second fellowship at Osaka University using Raman spectroscopy and other imaging modes coupled with machine learning to investigate the influence of adhesion pathways on immune activation in autoimmune vasculitis and infection.
