Science that saves lives

For 100 years, Baker Institute scientists have been turning discovery into impact — from molecular biology through to clinical trials and community health. Our work is focused where it matters most: heart attack, heart failure, diabetes and obesity.

All of this is driven by a single purpose: a longer, healthier life for every Australian.

Four research programs driving change

Our work is anchored in four major research programs that represent the world's most critical health challenges. Each spans the full research spectrum — from discovery science and clinical trials through to public health — and draws on the collective expertise of Baker Institute scientists, clinicians and collaborators.

These programs span discovery science, clinical research, and population health studies. By working across the disease continuum — from genetic and molecular research through to community-based prevention programs — we're tackling these conditions from every angle.

Be part of the research

Research is most powerful when it reflects the full range of human experience. Whether you're living with a condition, building a research career, or want to help shape the direction of our science — there's a place for you here.
Clinical research trials
Clinical research trials
By taking part in one of our clinical trials, you can play a direct role in advancing treatments for heart disease, diabetes and obesity. We have studies underway right now that need volunteers — no prior research experience required.

Student research
The Baker Institute offers postgraduate and vacation research opportunities across our laboratories and research programs. Work alongside world-class scientists on questions that are saving lives today.
Community Engagement Group
Community Engagement Group
You don't need a science background to make a real difference. Our Community Engagement Group brings together people living with heart disease, diabetes or obesity to help our researchers ask better questions — and make sure the answers reach the people who need them most.

We have formal research departments embedded within Deakin, La Trobe and the University of Melbourne, as well as strong collaborative ties with Monash University. These partnerships amplify our research and open pathways for translation.
AusDiab
AusDiab
The Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study (AusDiab) is one of the most significant population health studies ever conducted in Australia. Launched in 1999, its findings continue to shape research, clinical practice and national health policy.
