Get a real taste of research — and get paid for it.
Not quite ready for postgraduate study but curious about a career in research? The Baker Institute's vacation internship program gives promising undergraduate students a paid, hands-on experience working within one of our research laboratories.
This isn't a shadowing program. You'll be embedded in a real research team, contributing to active projects in cardiovascular or diabetes science, and getting a genuine feel for what a research career looks like day to day. For students considering Honours, Masters or PhD study at the Baker Institute, it's the ideal first step.
What you'll receive
- A four-week research laboratory placement (public holidays excluded).
- A$500 per week payment.
- Mentorship from experienced researchers.
- Exposure to world-class research facilities and methodology.
Who can apply?
The program is open to students in the second-last or final year of their undergraduate degree, as well as recent graduates. Strong academic results, a genuine interest in research and alignment with a participating laboratory's focus are the key selection criteria.
We encourage you to reach out directly to any laboratories you're interested in before applying — it's one of the things our selection panel looks for, and it's a great way to start building relationships with potential future supervisors.
How to apply
Applications for the 2025/26 round are now closed. Details for the 2026/27 round will be available towards the end of 2026.
