Diabetes and Population Health
Dr Sylvia Ye is a PhD student whose work bridges clinical practice and epidemiological research to address critical gaps in type 1 diabetes care. Driven by the recognition that older adults with type 1 diabetes remain underserved by current clinical guidelines, which are predominantly based on studies of younger populations, she brings a clinician's perspective to population-level research. Her commitment lies in answering questions that arise directly from patient care, particularly for an ageing population with complex comorbidities.
Dr Ye holds a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (2016), Bachelor of Biomedicine (2012), and Master of Clinical Research Methods (2022). She is a qualified Endocrinologist and General Physician (FRACP).
Her PhD research focuses on type 1 diabetes across the adult lifespan, examining how outcomes, risks, and care needs evolve with age. Working at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute's Clinical Diabetes and Epidemiology laboratory, she applies epidemiological and biostatistical methods to linked administrative and clinical datasets. Under the supervision of Professor Jonathan Shaw, Professor Dianna Magliano, and Dr Rahul Barmanray, and supported by an NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarship, her research aims to produce findings that directly inform clinical decision-making for type 1 diabetes management across the adult lifespan.
