The opportunity
We’re looking for an experienced solutions-focussed IT Security Analyst to join our dynamic IT team.
As our new IT Security Analyst, you will report to the IT Infrastructure Manager, and will be responsible for protecting the organisation’s digital assets through monitoring, managing Palo Alto firewalls and Proofpoint email security, conducting risk assessments, supporting compliance with standards like ISO 27001, and leading security awareness programs, requiring strong technical expertise and communication skills within a multidisciplinary medical research environment. While day-to-day firewall changes may not be routine, you’ll be required to have the capability to troubleshoot, consult, and make configuration changes when needed.
This is a position for an experienced IT professional with security-focused experience and skills, preferably within the not-for-profit/medical research sector. Expertise in firewall administration—preferably with Palo Alto Networks — and in email security solutions such as Proofpoint is essential.
How this role makes a difference
The IT Security Analyst role is vital in safeguarding the organisation’s digital environment by proactively identifying and addressing cybersecurity threats, ensuring best practices are followed, and promoting a culture of security awareness and compliance across the organisation.
Through this key role, you can contribute to our vision to help people to live healthier for longer, and to stop heart disease and diabetes in their tracks.
How you’ll make an impact
In this role you will be expected to:
- Monitor and respond to threats, manage key security tools and conduct risk assessments and attack simulations.
- Strengthen cybersecurity across systems, ensure software compliance, and collaborate with stakeholders to ensure a secure infrastructure.
- Conduct vulnerability assessments, support penetration testing, and ensure compliance with ISO 27001, ACSC Essential Eight, and the Privacy Act.
- Maintain security documentation and follow ITIL Change Management processes for implementing IT changes.
- Develop and enforce cybersecurity policies, conduct risk assessments, and embed security by design to support strategic cyber risk management.
- Lead staff education on security best practices and deliver awareness campaigns and training sessions.
- Support secure implementation of infrastructure upgrades and cloud services, integrating security into system design and participating in continuity and incident response planning.
- Manage BeyondTrust EPM and Action1 platforms, maintain least-privilege access, ensure endpoint compliance, and provide regular updates to stakeholders.
What will you bring?
You will have:
- Relevant qualifications in Information Technology or a related field or equivalent experience.
- Proven experience as an IT Security Analyst with strong knowledge of security frameworks (ISM, NIST, Essential Eight) and ITIL certification.
- Skilled in conducting risk assessments, implementing security by design, and producing high-quality security documentation.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Proficient in writing documentation, incident reports, and user guides, and providing clear communication during critical incidents.
- Solid technical expertise in Windows Active Directory, Office 365, Windows/Linux servers, VMware, networking, and cloud platforms.
- Experience with tools such as Docker, Ansible, BeyondTrust EPM, Action1, and enterprise anti-malware/EDR systems.
- Strong understanding of networking protocols and principles, including VLANs, routing, encryption, and wireless security.
- Excellent analytical, time management, and customer service skills, with the ability to multitask and work independently.
