Professor Peter Clifton

Professor Peter Clifton, Head of Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute's Nutrition Intervention Laboratory has been awarded a fellowship of the Nutrition Society of Australia. The Fellowship is the society's most senior award and is presented to individuals who have made contributions of special merit to the scientific study of nutrition and its applications to people and animals.

The Nutrition Society of Australia represents qualified, practising scientists and educators from diverse disciplines who are brought together by a common interest in the research and application of nutrition. The main focus of the society is mutual scientific support of members and the science of nutrition.

"Our understanding of nutrition as a science and the role it plays in the prevention and management of disease has really come of age.

"It is a privilege to be an ambassador for nutrition and to share the learnings with the public so they can benefit from the science of good health" said Professor Clifton.

Professor Clifton has been a nutrition researcher for over 20 years. His passion and commitment to the science of nutrition is reflected in his long list of achievements throughout these years.

A clinician specialising in endocrinology, Professor Clifton is an early world-leader in the genetic determinants of dietary responsiveness to fat and cholesterol. He is co-author of the best selling publication, The CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet and The Healthy Heart Program; he has also published 164 journal articles and six book chapters.

Professor Clifton has also been appointed by the South Australian Minister for Health to the Obesity, Prevention and Lifestyle Scientific Advisory Committee.
