Heaven Jarra
BSc, University of Melbourne

Heaven is currently completing a Master of Clinical Research, specialising in Translational Medicine. Her interest in epigenetics began during her undergraduate studies in molecular biology, where she developed a fascination with how gene regulation influences cell identity and function, and how these processes contribute to disease. This interest guided her focus towards chronic metabolic diseases, particularly diabetes, which remains a significant global health challenge. Motivated by a passion for the intersection of biomedical research and commercial innovation, she is committed to advancing science that not only deepens biological understanding but also delivers meaningful, patient-centred outcomes.
Under the guidance of Professor Sam El-Osta and Dr Ram Abou Zaki, Heaven’s current project investigates the use of EZH1/2 inhibitors to induce endocrine cell fate in pancreatic stellate cells, aiming to restore delta-cell function and improve glucose homeostasis. Her work supports the group’s broader efforts to harness chromatin remodelling as a regenerative strategy for managing metabolic disorders. Ultimately, her research seeks to inform the development of innovative therapeutic approaches that alleviate the burden of insulin-dependent diabetes.
