Dr Surafel Tegegne is a Senior Research Officer and Bioinformatician with over 6 years of experience within the Cellular and Molecular Metabolism laboratory led by Professor Mark Febbraio at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute and Monash University.

As a bioinformatician, he specialises in analysis and integration of various multi-omics and other large datasets, such as bulk and single-cell transcriptomics, proteomics, lipidomics, metabolomics, microbiome and pathway analysis.

In his current role, Surafel leverages AI and machine learning approaches, uses multiple R and Python packages as well as web-based analysis platforms for data analysis and tool development. He’s also experienced in the use of command line interface, version control tools as well as cloud computing.

In addition to his computational skills, he also worked in clinical trials and wet lab, having worked with mouse and C. elegans models during and after his PhD candidature at La Trobe University which was completed in 2017 which was funded by Latrobe University Postgraduate Scholarships.
