Student research project

Improving the cardiovascular health of cancer survivors

Supervisor(s): Associate Professor Erin Howden and Associate Professor Andre La Gerche

Project summary

The landscape of cancer therapeutics is continually evolving with direct implications for survivorship and disease progression for many cancer patients. Any successes though may come at the cost of undesirable side effects such as cardiotoxicity (damage to the heart). Indeed cancer survivors have markedly increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease compared to the general population. This being said, not all cardiovascular disease seen in cancer survivors can be explained by cardiotoxicity.

We are seeking to better understand the drivers of cardiotoxicity and cardiovascular disease risk in cancer survivors and determine the most effective treatment approaches.

This project is suitable for a Masters or PhD student.
