Determining the cardiovascular effects of Long Covid and response to treatment

Supervisor(s): Associate Professor Erin Howden and Associate Professor Andre La Gerche

Project summary

The pandemic has increased the awareness of the proportion of in individuals with impairment in functional capacity. This phenomenon (often labelled 'Long Covid') is attributable to a variety of contributing factors rather than a single mechanism or disease. The presentation of 'Long Covid' is highly variable, though our lab has found that reduced functional capacity is commonly observed and likely plays a role in precipitating the increased burden of post-Covid cardiovascular disease (CVD). We need a more nuanced understanding of the drivers of functional impairment in Long Covid to identify subtypes and inform more effective treatment. Multimodality phenotyping of an individual’s oxygen transport pathway can inform our understanding of complex diseases, improve diagnostic ability, identify new treatment targets, and allow the precise targeting of therapies to specific subtypes of patients leading to improved outcomes.

This project is suitable for a PhD student to join our team to contribute to the work being undertaken to understand Long Covid and test the effects of personalised interventions.
