The opportunity

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Animal Ethics Manager to oversee our Animal Ethics Office. The appointee will be responsible for managing the operations of the Animal Ethics Office and providing administrative support to the two Animal Ethics Committees (AECs). This includes providing training and education opportunities for Alfred Research Alliance Members, managing the animal use licences for the various Alliance organisations and coordinating the inspections of animal facilities and monitoring compliance.

The successful applicant will be highly motivated, with a strong background in administration, research governance and the development of systems and processes.

Key duties

In this role you will be expected to:

  • Manage the Animal Ethics Office team and ensure that the administrative requirements of the Animal Ethics Committees are met.
  • Maintain a database of animal ethics applications and approvals.
  • Ensure that key compliance programs are functioning.

Skills and experience

You will have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in the field of biological science or zoological science preferably at a postgraduate level.
  • Experience in research administration management/research governance in an academic or medical research environment.
  • Experience managing staff or students.
  • Experience in the development of research governance, administrative policies, systems and procedures highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of relevant animal welfare legislation and codes of practice concerning the use of animals for scientific purposes.
  • A high level of interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities and strict deadlines.
